M.C., thank you for the view, comment and rate. They are a regal bird, in a dorky sort of way, if one can say such a thing. I had one poop in the air on a sky light in my roof once, nothing regal about that! It was as if a five gallon bucket of white wash had been dumped on the roof. And, there was no way to clean it, only to wait it out. Eventually, it washed away, but it took a long time. Forever after, that is my association with this bird. I understand that in Florida, they are not shy around people. Here in Maine, though, they are very wary and hard to photograph. So, thanks for appreciating what it takes to get a good photo and for appreciating the bird!
Years ago in Chatfield reservoir, my brother and I quietly paddled a canoe into a GBH rookery at 2am to fish for bass. It was an area full of enormous dead cottonwoods, mostly submerged. the canoe hit a stump and the sound of the aluminum thump woke the birds. one at a time as the woke, they squaked and let a bomb drop, waking another in the process. it was like WWII as dozens of giant white gobs hit the water all around us. somehow, we escaped clean.
