FLYday - Bald eagle

Bald eagle, adult, Phippsburg Maine

FYday is an homage to what our feathered friends do best, fly.

This post was chosen for the cover of Open Salon as Editor's Pick. It was the fifteenth of my works to be chosen. For the first time, I had two Editor's Picks on the cover at the same time, this one and my previous post which also had eagles. For more please see http://open.salon.com/cover

  2. Love to watch eagles and hawks soar... they go for miles with nothing more than the occasional twitch of their wings.

  4. M.C.S., jmaci949 and l'Heure Bleue, thanks for the views, rates and comments. The best part about that image is that I took it from my front deck while wearing my bathrobe. Oh ya! Life can be RRRREEEALLLY good a lot of the time.

  8. Camera Cruise, Kathy and Heidi, thank you very much. Heidi, all of my photographs are taken by me. I've never posted another photographer's work.

  9. Sublime! How many shots did you have to take to get this one?
I'm jealous. All I get in my neck of woods are muscovy ducks, turkey vultures and grackles. All though I do love grackles.

Btw, this reminds of that old children's rhyme: "Birdy, birdy in the sky, why you do that in my eye. I'm no baby. I won't cry. I'm just glad that cows don't fly." :)

  10. Trudge, funny! I've never heard that one. I think I took two shots before the one I used here. But, I've taken thousands of eagle photographs in the past to be ready for this one. Thank you very much for the view, rate and comment.

  13. The first time I went to the Ojibwa reservation in Northern WI, (20 years ago) I was given instructions by elders that it was considered rude to point or yell when you saw an eagle. I began to notice when an eagle soared above us, people would look up and use their chin to indicate an eagle siting.

  17. You never fail to impress me with your photos. I grew up in Bay Ridge in Brooklyn and would spend long times on my back on the sea wall where there is now a highway marveling at the sea gulls sailing overhead. Flying has always struck me as pure magic.

  20. I once saw a bald eagle like that canoeing along a river in North Carolina. I had seen it as a speck in the sky. Moments later there was a shadow on the water and I looked up to see what you captured on "film". It was breath taking. Thanks and R.

  25. Great picture. However, in these politically correct times not even the Bald Eagle is protected.
