Scenic Sunday - Fort Popham on The Kennebec River, Phippsburg, Maine

Fort Popham on the Kennebec River, Phippsburg, Maine in autumn. I took this aerial view in 2010. Hunnewell Beach is in the foreground. The view is looking north up the Kennebec River. Atkins Bay is to the left or west of the fort. Cox's Head is in the background to the left or west of the fort. Gilbert's Head is just north and to the right or east of the fort.

Wow...I love seeing the Kennebec River and esp here. It was behind my house where i grew up in Norridgewock and have so many fond memories of it. I am sure it is much cleaner than it was then because when I was a boy they used it to transport pulp wood down it. Thanks for this birdseye view and the memories of this great river.

I love seeing this view again. Reminds me of the views flying up to Rockport from Boston in a small plane.

  3. Algis and Spike, thanks to you both. I've lived here all my life, but to see the river this way is a real treat. I have taken many photos on the beach and from the area of Cox's Head looking south, down the river. But this is my only series of shots looking north and seeing the great expanse of river from the air. Thanks for the rates.

  7. clayball, jmac and M.C.S., thanks to you all for the recognition. And, yes, the water was that blue. I did not alter the color for that image. Sometimes, the water is green, sometimes, gray. It depends on the light. For some reason, in the fall the water is especially blue and also in the spring (it is outside as I write very blue). Sometimes it's brown, especially when there has been lots of rain up river which brings silt down the river with it.

  8. Lovely photo of a beautiful part of the country. (I'll be in Portland much of next week. Let me know if you would like to meet. And hope the procedure you mentioned on my post goes ok.)

That water! And what appears to be an appreciation for the shoreline!?! I've been in the corner of Maine once, while at a wedding in NH. Must have eaten four lobsters. And it was COLD at the end of August. Whole different world.
