FLYday - Double Osprey Delight

FLYday is an homage to what our feathered friends do best, fly.

These are Osprey, also called Fish Hawks. The bird on the left is an adult female chasing a first summer, male bird away from the nest. The mother bird on the left has two new chicks in a nearby nest. The younger bird on the right was hatched last year and probably was trying to come back to the nest it knew when it was a new chick. Kind of sad!

  1. Excellent capture! I took some great osprey shots a little earlier when two were making lots of noise. I'll have to take a closer look at them to see if they tell a similar story! Love your header! What great company while you are paddling. ~karen

  3. Karen and Grammie G, thank you very much. It does look like some kind of 'big bird' ballet, if not an out and out fight.

  5. Great picture Robin. I spent a half hour last night chasing a single Momma Osprey around the sky alternately capturing a right or left wing, tail feathers and blank sky. Birds in flight are HARD. It's great to see you put a few words down here on your blog. I've been missing them. :-). AnnieO

  7. AnnieO, thank for that. I'm tickled that someone recognizes how hard it is to get birds in flight. It takes huge practice and patience and do overs!

  12. Shawn, John, AtHomePilgrim and clay ball, thanks all for viewing and commenting. As many of you know by now, I"m addicted to photograpy, especially capturing birds. Birds in flight present particular challenges and rewards. It gives me great pleasure that others enjoy the fruits of my labors.

  15. Fantastic capture, Robin. I feel sorry for the homesick bird, but we must all eventually leave home.

  16. Great photos of the ospreys. I see plenty of them around the bay here but never lined up so perfectly as that.

  17. Hilke, Andrew, Joo and Mick, thank you all! I've never seen a photo of them flying in sync. like that either. Hilke, I thought the same thing. I guess if my kids had persisted in trying to come home I would have gotten kind of testy with them, too!

  20. Frank, Springman and Holdingmoments, thank you! My record high count for Osprey at one time is 12 right here at my house. But, that said, I never see them flying together or at least lined up like these. Springman, I think it would be really cool to have a giant silk screen 10 feet across of this image and have it suspended in an airport lobby. Eh?
